Escola Cristã João Calvino

The start of the Christian school “João Calvino” in 2003 was the fulfillment of a dream.  The school started in a provisional way, but already in the first year there were three groups of 15 children.  For the current academic year, 90 students are enrolled in the Brazilian grades knows as Grades 1-5.  They began by using the church building, but thanks to the generous support of the churches of Classis Niagara and Ontario West, the Canadian Reformed World Relief Fund, and the blessings of our Lord, a very solid, functional, and inviting school building has been built to provide a basic elementary education.  Many of the children attending the school now would not be receiving an education otherwise, because the Brazilian schools lack enough spaces for the number of local children, and the parents cannot afford to send the children to another district.

This project not only has the goal to give a good Christian education to the children of the church, but also to spread the gospel among the children, whose parents don’t visit the church.  We now have an opportunity to tell these children about Jesus Christ, and via the children to also reach the hearts of their parents.  The effect of this approach is already noticeable, because parents have started to visit the church services on Sundays.  It makes us happy to see that the goal of the mission work of our Canadian sister churches will be realized this way and that it will be for the Glory of our God.
